Research shows that when kids eat breakfast:

• They are more likely to get the nutrients they need to get through the morning.

• They have higher test scores, miss less school and are tardy less often.

• It's easier for them to focus, concentrate, solve problems and learn.

• Its easier for them to behave in the classroom.

Four Tips for Making Breakfast a Habit

A nutritious breakfast provides one-fourth of a child's daily nutrient needs. Children who skip breakfast seldom make up for the nutrients they missed out on later in the day. Make breakfast part of your household's morning routine by following these four steps:

1. Be a role model. If you want your child to eat breakfast, eat breakfast yourself!

2. Keep breakfast foods on hand.
Have at least two easy-to-serve items from each food group. For more information check out our Breakfast in a Hurry Chart.

3. Make it easy.
Keep breakfast foods highly visible and in convenient spots for kids to grab. For a portable breakfasts, use our handy chart to mix and match ingredients for nutritious breakfast sandwiches.

4. Try School Breakfast.
If kids don't have time to eat at home or aren't hungry when they leave in the morning, encourage them to eat School Breakfast.

Moms Move at Super Speed
A nationwide "Hectic Breakfast Survey" found that mothers are superheroes every morning! According to the survey, moms average a staggering 6.3 different tasks within an average breakfast period of 9.3 minutes. In addition to making breakfast:

* 75 percent of moms help with backpacks and school books
* 62 percent help with hair brushing
* 48 percent help with packing lunches

Even on the busiest days, stress the importance of breakfast so that children establish the habit of fueling up in the morning.

Pack Plenty of Good Nutrition in Lunches from Home

From:School Lunch
Source: http://www.nutritionexplorations.org/parents/school-lunch.asp

Pack Plenty of Good Nutrition in Lunches from Home

Make good nutrition a priority and involve your children in planning lunches from home. Their "buy-in" makes it less likely foods will be traded, go in the garbage, or come home uneaten.

* Let the Food Groups Be the Guide. As a rule-of-thumb, make sure lunches include at least three of the MyPyramid Five Food Groups. Pack whole, fresh foods instead of processed foods. For example, fresh fruit instead of fruit snacks.
* Have Children Buy Milk. Send money to school for children to purchase milk with their lunch instead packing a fruit juice, fruit-drink or soft drink. Research shows that children who drink milk with lunch are more likely to meet their daily calcium needs. Fruit flavored beverages and soft drinks provide calories and few, if any, nutrients. If children bring juice with lunch, make sure it is 100 percent juice. Make sure you pack low-fat cheese or a yogurt in their lunch for a Milk Group serving.
* Let Children Choose Flavored Milk. Flavored milk has the same nutrients as white milk. Research shows that children who drink flavored milk don't consume more fat or sugar than children who drink only white milk.
* Serve the Same Foods with a New Twist. Cut cheese into cubes instead of slices or cut apples into circles instead of wedges.
* Consider Likes and Dislikes. Have your children help you create a list of foods they like for lunch. Take them to the grocery store and ask for lunch box suggestions.
* Keep Foods Safe. Use an insulated lunch box that includes an ice pack.

Lunch Box Ideas

Packing different lunches keep kids from getting bored and helps ensure they get the variety of foods needed for a nutritious diet. Here are a few ideas to help you "think out of the lunchbox."
Use different breads or cut them into different shapes

* Wrap a salad or lean meat and cheese in a tortilla or mountain bread
* Roll a tortilla spread with hummus and grated carrots or refried beans mixed with cheese
* Make tuna and cheese subs instead of a traditional sandwich
* Stuff mini-pita pockets with different sandwich fillings
* Sprinkle cheese in a pita spread with pizza sauce
* Tuck in an "I Love You" note or a riddle

Serve a salad instead of a sandwich

* Toss leftover pasta with veggies and dressing
* Serve a "salad in bag" with shredded cheese and low-fat dressing on the side

Pair vegetables, grains and protein-rich foods

* Cut, fresh vegetables, cheese cubes and whole-grain crackers
* Hummus with pita wedges and vegetables for dipping
* Hard-cooked egg and whole-grain roll.

Serve leftovers - Many leftovers taste great served cold!

* Cold spaghetti
* Chicken pieces
* Baked ziti or other casseroles
* Pizza slices

Send soup or chili in a thermos

* Add a small bag of shredded cheese to sprinkle on top

Make it yogurt

* Yogurt in a tube or drinkable yogurt with a muffin and fruit
* A carton of yogurt with low-fat granola and fruit to mix in
* A smoothie in a thermos along with a banana and graham crackers

References:

1. Then I decided it was time for her to take full responsibility and live with the consequences if she did forget something.

I worked with her to develop systems that I hoped would help eliminate these frantic phone calls and would aid her in remembering all of her materials for school.

In the evening we would develop a check list of everything she needed the next day. This list would include all homework items, along with any books needed. Often a free reading book was needed in class. We would add this to our list. Our list also included lunch, jacket and anything else that was needed the next day.

We then put this note on the front door. We had to leave through the front door in the morning so we put the note where I knew we’d see it. A quick glance at the list would tell my daughter if she had everything she needed.

We then began a day planner. As she went through her day she would write down not only homework assignments but also what items she needed to bring home from school. If she wrote down her math homework, but left the book at school, she could not complete the homework. It was her responsibility to check her day planner to make sure she had everything she needed to bring home. With this day planner, she also knew exactly what her assignments were. No more calling friends to find out what the homework was.

We also put money in her backpack that would cover the cost of one lunch. So, should she forget her lunch at home, she always had the money to buy lunch at school.

We also developed a packing list for spending the night at a friend’s house. Again, it never failed that something was left at home, either a gift, if it was a party, or a pillow or maybe a toothbrush. This packing list made it a snap to throw everything into a duffle bag and not leave something behind.

Checklists and a day planner took us from several calls in a month for forgotten items to almost never forgetting anything at home, or at school.

Article by:

Audrey Okaneko is mom to two girls. We’ve had some teachers that wanted a different notebook for every subject. We’ve had some teachers that wanted 5 subject notebooks to take notes for class. It is always so hard to second guess what the teacher may want.

Of course if you wait until the first or second day of school to buy your supplies, then many of the stores have very little left. Especially items like compasses. These can be very hard to find that first or second day of school.

One trick we learned was to buy everything we thought the teacher might want. If the kids went to school and discovered they did not need the item, we would then return it. It was much easier to return a few items, versus driving all over town looking for sold out items.

When children enter junior high and high school, the size of the school and the thought of changing classes all day long can be overwhelming. Our local schools give both junior high school and senior high school students their schedules a week before school actually starts. We always walked the path many times. We walked from class to class so that my children felt comfortable the first day of school. We also found bathrooms, the gym and the cafeteria. This walkthrough can help eliminate some of the stress of starting a new school.

Prior to school starting, visit either the library or the book store, so your child has a book to read during free time. I found that in the older grades, teachers expected kids to have a book that first week of school. As the school year developed the teachers often assigned a specific genre but that first week, free choice was almost always acceptable.

The week before school starts, we changed our bedtime and wake up time to coincide with the school schedule. No more sleeping until 8 or 9 a.m. By making this change a week ahead of time, it causes much less stress that first week of school.

All of these preparations have helped make back to school run quite smoothly in our home.

Article by:

Audrey Okaneko is mom to two girls. Add some festive borders with construction paper, some fun cartoon cut-outs and a place to pin graded homework papers or other school work your children will be bringing home each week. Hang your bulletin board in a prominent place within the home (perhaps a hallway) and update the decorations, as a family, with each approaching season.

How about taking a first-day photo of your children heading off to school, catching a ride on the bus or as they are waking up and filtering out of bed. These can be displayed on your new bulletin board. Transfer the photos and other memorabilia to a special “This Year in School” scrapbook as new pictures and school related items are gathered throughout the year.

What about making a welcome-home tray of cupcakes and hanging banners and balloons in the dining room when your children return home from their first day of school? Or host a back-to-school party for your children and have them invite their new school friends?

Another thoughtful way to send your children into a new school year is to purchase a special gift to hide in their book bag, lunchbox or to tuck under their pillow to find when they come home that night. Write a special note to let your child know you are thinking of him.

Although home school families will want to modify some of these ideas, these should still provide some inspiration for the many things you can do to make a fun back-to-school memory.

School Tips - Part 4

EATING DURING THE SCHOOL DAY

Most schools regularly send schedules of cafeteria menus home. With this advance information, you can plan on packing lunch on the days when the main course is one your child prefers not to eat.

Try to get your child's school to stock healthy choices such as fresh fruit, low-fat dairy products, water and 100 percent fruit juice in the vending machines.

Each 12-ounce soft drink contains approximately 10 teaspoons of sugar and 150 calories. Drinking just one can of soda a day increases a child's risk of obesity by 60%. Restrict your child's soft drink consumption.

BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL CHILD CARE

During middle childhood, youngsters need supervision. A responsible adult should be available to get them ready and off to school in the morning and watch over them after school until you return home from work.

Children approaching adolescence (11- and 12-year-olds) should not come home to an empty house in the afternoon unless they show unusual maturity for their age.

If alternate adult supervision is not available, parents should make special efforts to supervise their children from a distance. Children should have a set time when they are expected to arrive at home and should check in with a neighbor or with a parent by telephone.

If you choose a commercial after-school program, inquire about the training of the staff. There should be a high staff-to-child ratio, and the rooms and the playground should be safe.

DEVELOPING GOOD HOMEWORK AND STUDY HABITS

Create an environment that is conducive to doing homework. Youngsters need a permanent work space in their bedroom or another part of the home that offers privacy.

Set aside ample time for homework.

Establish a household rule that the TV set stays off during homework time.

Supervise computer and internet use.

Be available to answer questions and offer assistance, but never do a child's homework for her.

Take steps to help alleviate eye fatigue, neck fatigue and brain fatigue while studying. It may be helpful to close the books for a few minutes, stretch, and take a break periodically when it will not be too disruptive.

If your child is struggling with a particular subject, and you aren't able to help her yourself, a tutor can be a good solution. Talk it over with your child's teacher first.

© 2009 - American Academy of Pediatrics

School Tips - Part 3

BULLYING

Bullying is when one child picks on another child repeatedly. Bullying can be physical, verbal, or social. It can happen at school, on the playground, on the school bus, in the neighborhood, or over the Internet.

When Your Child Is Bullied

Help your child learn how to respond by teaching your child how to:

1. "I don't like what you are doing."

2. "Please do NOT talk to me like that."

3. "Why would you say that?"

Teach your child when and how to ask for help.

Encourage your child to make friends with other children.

Support activities that interest your child.

Alert school officials to the problems and work with them on solutions.

Make sure an adult who knows about the bullying can watch out for your child's safety and well-being when you cannot be there.

When Your Child Is the Bully

Be sure your child knows that bullying is never OK.

Set firm and consistent limits on your child's aggressive behavior.

Be a positive role mode. Show children they can get what they want without teasing, threatening or hurting someone.

Use effective, non-physical discipline, such as loss of privileges.

Develop practical solutions with the school principal, teachers, counselors, and parents of the children your child has bullied.

When Your Child Is a Bystander

Tell your child not to cheer on or even quietly watch bullying.

Encourage your child to tell a trusted adult about the bullying.

Help your child support other children who may be bullied. Encourage your child to include these children in activities.

Encourage your child to join with others in telling bullies to stop.

© 2009 - American Academy of Pediatrics

Join us tomorrow for more helpful back to school tips!

School Tips - Part 2

TRAVELING TO AND FROM SCHOOL

Review the basic rules with your youngster:

School Bus

If your child’s school bus has lap/shoulder seat belts, make sure your child uses one at all times when in the bus. If your child’s school bus does not have lap/shoulder belts, encourage the school to buy or lease buses with lap/shoulder belts.

Wait for the bus to stop before approaching it from the curb.

Do not move around on the bus.

Check to see that no other traffic is coming before crossing.

Make sure to always remain in clear view of the bus driver.

Children should always board and exit the bus at locations that provide safe access to the bus or to the school building.

Car

All passengers should wear a seat belt and/or an age- and size-appropriate car safety seat or booster seat.

Your child should ride in a car safety seat with a harness as long as possible and then ride in a belt-positioning booster seat. Your child is ready for a booster seat when she has reached the top weight or height allowed for her seat, her shoulders are above the top harness slots, or her ears have reached the top of the seat.

Your child should ride in a belt-positioning booster seat until the vehicle's seat belt fits properly (usually when the child reaches about 4' 9" in height and is between 8 to 12 years of age). This means that the child is tall enough to sit against the vehicle seat back with her legs bent at the knees and feet hanging down and the shoulder belt lies across the middle of the chest and shoulder, not the neck or throat; the lap belt is low and snug across the thighs, and not the stomach.

All children under 13 years of age should ride in the rear seat of vehicles. If you must drive more children than can fit in the rear seat (when carpooling, for example), move the front-seat passenger’s seat as far back as possible and have the child ride in a booster seat if the seat belts do not fit properly without it.

Remember that many crashes occur while novice teen drivers are going to and from school. You should require seat belt use, limit the number of teen passengers, do not allow eating, drinking, cell phone conversations or texting to prevent driver distraction; and limit nighttime driving and driving in inclement weather. Familiarize yourself with your state’s graduated driver license law and consider the use of a parent-teen driver agreement to facilitate the early driving learning process.

Bike

Always wear a bicycle helmet, no matter how short or long the ride.

Ride on the right, in the same direction as auto traffic.

Use appropriate hand signals.

Respect traffic lights and stop signs.

Wear bright color clothing to increase visibility.

Know the "rules of the road."

Walking to School

Make sure your child's walk to a school is a safe route with well-trained adult crossing guards at every intersection.

Be realistic about your child's pedestrian skills. Because small children are impulsive and less cautious around traffic, carefully consider whether or not your child is ready to walk to school without adult supervision.

If your child is young or is walking to new school, walk with them the first week to make sure they know the route and can do it safely.

Bright colored clothing will make your child more visible to drivers.

In neighborhoods with higher levels of traffic, consider starting a “walking school bus,” in which an adult accompanies a group of neighborhood children walking to school.

© 2009 - American Academy of Pediatrics

Join us tomorrow for more helpful back to school tips!

School Tips - Part 1

MAKING THE FIRST DAY EASIER

Remind your child that she is not the only student who is a bit uneasy about the first day of school. Teachers know that students are anxious and will make an extra effort to make sure everyone feels as comfortable as possible.

Point out the positive aspects of starting school: It will be fun. She'll see old friends and meet new ones. Refresh her positive memories about previous years, when she may have returned home after the first day with high spirits because she had a good time.

Find another child in the neighborhood with whom your youngster can walk to school or ride with on the bus.

If you feel it is appropriate, drive your child (or walk with her) to school and pick her up on the first day.

BACKPACK SAFETY

Choose a backpack with wide, padded shoulder straps and a padded back.

Pack light. Organize the backpack to use all of its compartments. Pack heavier items closest to the center of the back. The backpack should never weigh more than 10 to 20 percent of the your child’s body weight.

Always use both shoulder straps. Slinging a backpack over one shoulder can strain muscles.

Consider a rolling backpack. This type of backpack may be a good choice for students who must tote a heavy load. Remember that rolling backpacks still must be carried up stairs, and they may be difficult to roll in snow.

© 2009 - American Academy of Pediatrics

Join us tomorrow for more helpful back to school tips!

5 Important Self Defense Moves For Women

5 Important Self Defense Moves For Women
By Rebecca M. Jacobs

Having some knowledge and preparation when it comes to protecting yourself will allow you to not only be safer, but also feel more confident when approached by a questionable stranger. This preparation may help you avoid a violent or invasive situation.

Preparing to protect yourself might involve taking a self defense class to learn a few solid moves or techniques. Here is a list of five important self defense strategies that every women should know (and practice) in order to keep themselves safer in the face of danger.

1. Above all, stay calm. While this is far easier said than done, it is by far the single most important factor in increasing your personal safety. Keeping your cool allows you to assess the situation, think about your reactions, and make a plan for your escape. Adrenaline starts to flow extremely quickly when we are threatened, and the shallow breathing and rapid heart rate can interfere with your rational thinking. Take some deep breaths, concentrate on remembering your self defense training, and plan your implementation.

2. If you are approached by someone demanding your wallet or your purse, the best thing you can do to protect yourself is to throw it as far away as you possibly can. If the assailant truly wants your money, they will go get it, allowing you to run away in a different direction.

3. Having a tool handy (such as your keys, umbrella, pen, etc.) and firmly gripped in your hand gives you an instant weapon. Do not hesitate to use this 'weapon' if someone attempts to grab you. Vulnerable places to strike include the face and neck areas. Quick movements will surprise your attacker, and surprise is truly your best weapon in a situation where someone is planning to overpower you.

4. When trying to avoid being grabbed or hit, moving in a triangular pattern (as opposed to moving in straight lines) makes your course unpredictable to someone reaching for you. Also, resisting the urge to back up-and instead lunging toward the attack-can throw off your assailant. Again, the element of surprise is in your favor in this situation. If you are running away from an attack, moving in a zig-zag manner will make it harder to get caught. This advice is also true for more dangerous situations (such as those involving a gun), as it is harder to hit a moving target than a still one or one moving in a straight line.

5. Some self defense courses will teach you to stomp on your attacker's foot or elbow him in the ribs in the event that you are grabbed from behind. In fact, the most effective move you can make is to forcefully use the back of your own head to smash into your attacker's face. Your skull is very hard, and will cause some serious pain if you can connect with his face. For reasons involving site security & features availability, we decided to change to VBulletin. For the past several weeks especially, your staff has had very little sleep making sure everything worked right with the conversion.

I think you guys are going to love your new features! There is so much to do here & to learn! The Mods & Mics have provided you with great information in the boot camp section. That should be your first stop when you have a question.

Now after all that good news, there are a few things you should know.

*We know you don't have your points. We have access to the old site so we can look up how many you had. Please reply to Hollie's post to make it easier for us to give them to you. Their not lost, just takes a long time to give 800 ppl points those that reply to her post get first priority.

*Currently, point shop items can not be put in your siggy, they instead show by your avatar, etc. this will be changed, so just have fun with the icons until then.

*If you are getting a "Page Not Found" error, you need to manually type policewives.org into your browser.

*If you can not log in, e-mail Tanya - j0eswife@policewives.org

*After logging in, you should be redirected to a page where you can see some nifty info, including recent posts and statistics.

*Once on the boards, your first stop should be the New Site Boot Camp forum. You will find important and helpful info there.

*Your next stop should be your user CP (link at top left of screen). Read the new site boot camp threads for more specific info regarding your user control panel.

*Your account is probably set to not receive emails or PMs, so you will need to enable those.

*Your account is probably set to not show avatars or signatures, so you will need to enable those.

*You may also want to enable visitor messages - this is like the guestbook on the old site.

*Next, e-mail Tanya to request your avatar gallery.

*Then, request access to special boards you had access to on the old site.

*Make sure that your account is set to receive emails from the Admin. This is required :)

Keep in mind that all of this has to be done manually, so be patient with us.

I hope you love it as much as we do, we had so much fun testing! Please take a minute to thank the mods, MICs & Member Board people for helping with testing & spending a very long sleepless transition night.

I cant wait to hear your thoughts!!! Log on now to the best site for police wives!

Countdown to ????

Over on our police wife support forums, we are counting down. These items are given to children in war torn countries such as Iraq and Afghanistan to encourage positive relations. By giving these children a favorable interaction with US troops, we increase the chances that they will remember that experience. These children are the future leaders of their war torn countries, and programs like Beanies for Baghdad could very well lead to alliances between the US and Iraq or Afghanistan.

PoliceWives.org collected more then 450 stuffed animals, 70 toy cars or trucks, 100 miscellaneous school supplies, 15 bags of candy, 100 beanies, 50 small toys, and much more. Everything collected will be sent to three different units and will provide those units with the specific supplies they have requested.

For more information, please visit http://www.beaniesforbaghdad.com/ and http://www.policewives.org

PoliceWives.org
http://www.policewives.org
PublicRelations@PoliceWives.org
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

http://www.free-press-release.com/news/200903/1237592236.html

Jail A Friend Event!!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 360px; height: 360px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_YycUGHpoWZI/ScLEovBlhsI/AAAAAAAAAQU/gaIK4eHMsMI/s400/jail+a+friend+graphic.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5315026714347538114" />
Its time for another fun Jail a Friend Event !!!

From now until noon pacific on Saturday you may throw one of your sisters in our PW Jail.
